Leisure and sports activities for the family

At least once a month, the Maison de la Famille Avignon puts on fun, varied activities for children and their families. Our activities are a great way for you to spend some quality time with your children outside of the home, and to break out of your routine!

Activities tend to take place at our Pointe-à-la-Croix and Carleton-sur-Mer locations, but we also hold activities elsewhere in the region. We often put on activities to celebrate specific moments in the year that children love, such as Halloween, Christmas and Valentine’s Day. Our activities program also includes things like yoga, arts and crafts.

How do our activities work?

There’s always a representative of the Maison de la Famille on-site to lead the activity and make sure everything goes as planned. However, as the parent (or caregiver), you are responsible for your child. After all, what we’re giving you is a winning recipe for a successful activity: interesting theme, someone to lead it, quality time with your children and other families, without any preparation or clean-up to do!

Our activities are usually free, although we do sometimes ask for a voluntary contribution.

Prenatal classes

The two-hour-long classes are held on evenings, and you must register in advance. There are 6 classes in total, four of which are held online (Zoom) and two in person.

The prenatal classes cover the following topics:

  • Pregnancy-related sickness
  • Delivery, part 1
  • Delivery, part 2
  • The first weeks with a newborn
  • Feeding a baby

We recommend that you use a computer or tablet to attend the online sessions. If you don’t have one, the Maison de la Famille can lend you a tablet for the duration of the course. You will need to discuss the terms of the loan with the course leader. In exceptional circumstances, you may be able to attend each session in person.

>>The next rounds of prenatal classes start on Tuesday, May 14th 2024, and Tuesday, August 20th, 2024.

The Maison de la Famille Avignon opens its doors to the public in Pointe-à-la-Croix and  Carleton-sur-Mer. Arrive when you like and stay as long as you’d like.

It’s an opportunity for you to enjoy a (hot) cup of coffee, go through the second-hand store, watch your child play, or simply pop in to change a diaper or to use the bathroom. Make yourself at home!

With or without registration depending of the type of activity. Everyone welcome!

We invite you to consult the monthly calendar for activity dates.

Lunch and learn for parents and caregivers

The Maison de la Famille Avignon organizes lunch and learn calls on Zoom for parents and caregivers. These group calls generally last from half an hour to 45 minutes and are a way for us to share information about family life, the role of parents and caregivers, children’s education, specific stages in a child’s development, etc.

Depending on the topic, the sessions will either be presented by members of the Maison de la Famille team or professionals from specific organizations. Lunch and learn sessions aim to provide parents and caregivers with valuable and accurate information about a given topic, and are also an opportunity for you to ask questions and share your own experiences. You do not need to register in advance.

If you have any suggestions of topics you would like to see covered during a lunch and learn session, let us know. We’re always happy to hear from you! Get in touch to share your ideas.

Respite childcare (day and evening)

The Maison de la Famille Avignon offers occasional childcare during the day for children aged 0–5 at our Pointe-à-la-Croix and Carleton-sur-Mer locations. This service is provided in a playgroup format, so that you can rest assured that your child is enjoying themselves with friends while you take a moment for yourself, whether you’re simply relaxing or running errands!

When is it?

Daytime respite childcare: Every Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Pointe-à-la-Croix (from May 9th) and every Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m in Carleton-sur-Mer (from May 15th).

*Note that there is no evening respite childcare for the moment.

Parents use this service for many reasons, including:

  • To give their child the opportunity to meet other children and play
  • To enjoy some down time
  • To free up some time so they can get jobs done
  • To go to an appointment
  • To work when day care services are closed

Our playgroup service is free, but we do suggest that you make a voluntary contribution. We want to ensure this service is accessible to all families who need it, as such having already attended a playgroup session does not automatically give your child priority for the following session if the group is at capacity.

What you’ll need to bring:

  • Their lunch
  • Water bottle
  • Indoor shoes (required to play in the La Bougeotte play room)
  • Outdoor clothing

The Maison de la Famille provides children with two snacks during the daytime playgroup sessions and one snack during the evening session.

Your child is not obligated to stay for the entire session, and you’re more than welcome to progressively increase the time they stay over the course of a few sessions to help them get acclimated — you can even stay with them for the first couple of times if you want! Just let us know how you’d like to proceed and we’ll work with you.

Registration

You will need to meet (in person or on the phone) with the leader of our playgroup service before your child attends their first session. This is your opportunity to share important information about your child which will help them settle in.

For subsequent sessions, simply give us a call or come to an arrangement with the playgroup leader about the best way to book their place.

* Evening respite childcare: Older and younger children are also welcome to join, but it is the parent’s responsibility to determine if the activities are suitable based on the child’s level of maturity.
